Needed brakes, the washer fluid was leaking, and the sway bar bushings squeak. VW called back with a list of repairs to be done, and I had to ask if they were actually talking about my car!

They listed:

Front brakes are toast

Washer fluid pump leaking

Transmission mount cracked

Exhaust hanger broken

CV boot torn

Various leaking gaskets including valve cover, something about the transmission, and something about the timing belt/chain cover

Of course the $20 repair - putting in new sway bar bushings - isn't on the list because they don't squeak when the car is in the shop.

So I'm going to be down $2-3k for repairs. I really wish I had a heated garage...

P.S. that's not my car in the picture, just something sexy I found on flikr.

There's your problem.

Jeez man, you going to get a second opinion before you let them work on your car? That sounds like an awful lot considering what you took it in for, might want to check and see if the dealership isn't ripping you off first.

And you can get a pretty decent kerosene heater for ~$200 at Lowes or Home Depot or wherever, that's what we use at my house. Warms up the whole garage in ten minutes flat even in the dead of winter.

I don't have any garage at all, so no amount of heat will make things better.

I will not get a second opinion because I don't have time, I don't have a second car, and because I've had an excellent relationship with this dealer over the past 7 years.

Some of the work is not critical (seeping gaskets can wait) but a broken tranny mount and brakes need to get fixed. The rest, well, I'm making a judgement call on it.

Fair enough, at least you thought it through. My aunt had an A4 Jetta and their dealership always tried to oversell them for stuff they didn't really need, so you'll forgive me for being wary of VW dealerships. Good luck man, hope it doesn't cost too much.

I've always had a good experience with this dealer (VW Centre Ville of Montreal). The service desk staff are immensely professional and the turnaround times are fast . I've had two different cars serviced with them and, in 7 years, I think this is the first time that I've had to leave one overnight.

Here's hoping I'm not getting screwed! :)
